More health Mon, 07.11.2005 08:07
With the nation becoming more health aware,
this year¹s Health and Lifestyle show will reflect this.

One new product to be introduced to Guernsey is
the Physiotherm Fitness and Health Cabin.
Aimee Le Cocq went down to the Peninsula Hotel to see exactly what it was.

When I was asked if I would like to try out a new beauty treatment I could hardly say no. What woman would? However when it was explained to me what it entailed - aromatherapy and being heated from the inside out - I was obviously a bit confused.

Nevertheless I new I needed a relaxing
treatment, so with a mix of excitement and nerves I set off for the Peninsula Hotel.

The Infra Red Fitness and Health Cabin was set up in one of the rooms at the hotel. It looked like a sauna with its wooden frame but as James Babbé, representative of the Physiotherm Company told me; it is nothing like a sauna. It harnesses the infrared that we get from the sun and transfers it into the body via the spine.

Sounds confusing? Well I must admit I was a little confused at first but once I got into the cabin and the diagrams were shown to me it all seemed simple.

The cabin itself is about the size of an average wardrobe and sits two people. Two infrared heaters are situated vertically on the wall and rest against the spine when you are seated. This is how the heat is transferred into the body down the receptors.

When I was in the booth I was not really sure what to expect. The heater was comfortably warming on my back. I expected to sweat, but it was gradual and began with the head and moved its way down through my body. I was not
uncomfortable at any point, unlike a sauna. The sweat produced was actually the toxins leaving my body. Apparently you sweat up to three times more than you would in a sauna.

The cabin had additional benefits, including aromatherapy oils, heated floor mat and a CD player (which provided me with relaxing music throughout), as well as different coloured lights above my head that could adjust my
moods.

Red symbolises vitality and energy, orange, prosperity and high spirits, green represents nature, harmony and balance, blue is the colour of tranquillity and is good for calmness and violet brings balance and perception.

It is very different to a sauna, as the treatment has nothing to do with the
room temperature. The ceramic tubes that produce the heat did not burn to the touch, so it was not painful or even uncomfortable to sit there for long periods of time. Normally infrared is extremely hot but the ceramic
tubes are filled with lava sand, which disperses the heat and reduces it to a manageable temperature.

Anyone can use this system - it is even suitable for pregnant women. There are a range of illnesses that it can also aid, including migraine, back pain and arthritis - it can even reduce stress and fatigue. For those who are trying to lose weight, it helps to burn fat and reduce cellulite.

The cabin can be set up in any room in the home due to the fact that it does not get wet like a sauna would. Because it is compact it will easily fit into a corner. It is also quite economical, and can cost as little as 20
pence per session to run. I must admit I did feel a lot calmer and de-stressed after the session. I also suffer from bad circulation and this was noticeably improved. If I had
the opportunity I would definitely go again.
But don¹t just take my word for it recommendations come from those a lot
more qualified than me, notably many health professionals. Dr Ralf Kleef, a legally certified specialist in hyperthermia and complimentary medicine says that:

The use of deep heat in Physiotherm infrared fitness and health cabins immediately produces a sense of well being and plays an important part in maintaining good health.
If you would like to try this new health system out for yourself, the Infrared Fitness and Health cabin will be at the Home and Lifestyle Show at Beau Sejour on the 10 November.
